Well researched, clearly written, excellent sources!
There seems to be three types of books when it comes to the Wake Island saga: the personal account, the scholarly analysis, and the journalistic story. Bill Sloan's book is the latter, a tapestry comprising personal stories, academic research as well as critical historical as well as tactical analysis. Sloan introduces the characters as the story evolves, piecing together many of the inconsistencies found in earlier published works. Sloan is highly critical of CDR Winfield Cunningham's role in both the command of the garrison as well as his responsibility for the garrison's surrender. Also criticized is the more heralded MAJ James Devereux, whose shortcomings, albeit much more limited, are also realized. This is an exceptional book which shall serve as a valuable anthology of some less heard stories of Wake's survivors and dead alike. Truly an homage to these men, so many of whom we are in the midst of losing today, whose gallantry will hopefully not be lost to the fickle memory of American History. REVIEW EVERY BOOK YOU READ, AUTHORS DESERVE YOUR THOUGHTS, OPINIONS AND CRITIQUES!

Shut off the game system and make your kids watch this!
This film is as much as a documentary as it is a call for action. American audiences will be taken aback and awed by the story of Bolivia's Vargas family. If your children do not appreciate the lifestyle they enjoy, (and whose do?) "The Devil's Miner" will no doubt inspire some gratitude in them at least until the Ritalin wears off. This is a brilliant film that points out the consequence of disparities between first and third-world nations. Quite simply, it's always the children that suffer. Imagine a 14 year-old that genuinely wants to go to school, despite the ridicule by other students who don't have the burden of also being the head of a household. What adds to the frustration of watching the film is how scant the wages of Bolivia compare to those of even modestly industrialized nations. All nations will undoubtedly struggle through the same process of modernization that Americans did some 150 plus years ago and Bolivia endures today. It is odd to see that the same child labor and working conditions that we outlawed so long ago are still alive and well in places like Bolivia. To see children working in mines and with limited if any safety provisions is as primitive as a modern incarnation of the slave trade. "The Devil's Miner" is inspiring in its mission of advocacy and the realization that for the cost of a typical video game system, a child or two in Bolivia could be kept out of the mines and go to school perhaps to eventually lead Bolivia out of its forlorn economic situation.

Based on 2007 version Not worth full price but helpful!
I read the reviews of just about every ASVAb Prep book out there. I bought the "Barron's book, which was one of -if not THE- most expensive book available. So the question is "Did it help?" Without any doubt, yes it did. Is it worth the MSRP of $29.99? No. Maybe $15.00, at best. Having taken a the ASVAB in 1993, I was unsure what to expect. I had five days from the time I decided to take the ASVAB to prepare for it. I shopped around online and at retail locations. I bought the Barron's book, and was broken hearted when I bombed the first practice test in the booklet. The second and third tests weren't much easier, but having reviewed my previously missed questions and getting back up to speed in math and general science, I did fairly well on the fourth and final practice test. I took the ASVAB on August 6, 2007 and was pleased to score extremely high across the board. The test itself was a bit easier than the Barron's book, which contains not a few errors, both factual and printing/editing. The CD-ROM featured the same hard-copy practice tests, it's not much help beyond the fact that my ASVAB was administered on a computer. I had no problems with any virus that was rumored to be on the CD. So how did I do? When I first took the test in 1993 I was still in high school, and my GT(General Techical) score (which is based generally on your VE and AR scores and is the standard baseline for the Army) was 123 , but it was a much different test. After serving four years in the military and then getting a Bachelors degree, the Barron's book helped me get a GT score of 142 and none of my line scores were lower than 132. I did not think the GT score went above 140, I guess I was wrong or things have changed. I attribute much of my success on the ASVAB to the practice tests in the Barron's book and can say that some of the questions will appear almost verbatim in the actual exam depending on what version you take. A decent book, perhaps one of the better ones on the market, shop around and take the test seriously. OH,! AND REVIEW EVERY BOOK YOU READ!
