Product Information

Completed in 1993 just weeks before the shocking abduction, torture and killing of toddler James Bulger by 10-year-olds Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, 'Blood Brothers' was withdrawn from publication out of respect for the victim's family. Twenty years on, Janus Oggsford has finally agreed to release it. A short Prologue revisits a climactic scene in which the dim-witted 'Speedy' Ramsbottom dies during a game of 'chicken', then the story proper begins with 9-year-old Samson Smalley at home, under self-imposed house arrest, ostensibly engaged in piano practice but in fact on tenterhooks. He has two main preoccupations: he is desperate to understand why his best friend and 'blood brother' Snorky has failed to visit him even once since the summer holidays began, in spite of having promised to visit him 'each and every day'; and he is fearful that vicious local vicar 'Polecat' Pilkington will sneak up to the house and nab him in connection with Speedy's unexplained death. Meanwhile Samson's mother hovers and witters inconsequentially, her own preoccupation being with the non-arrival of a letter from the Grammar School, hopefully confirming a scholarship for Samson. Taking advantage of a thick mist which rolls down from the moors, Samson slips out of the house and makes for the nearby woods, hoping to come across Snorky there. Instead, he finds himself hunted down in terrifying circumstances by 'Boy Sunday', a feral 'blackamoor' - then, just as he thinks he is safe, he comes face to face with 'Polecat', and faces a new emergency. Back home, severely shaken from his adventures, Samson relives several pivotal scenes from the early days of his developing relationship with Snorky. First, he re-experiences Snorky's 'coin-on-the-glass' brain teaser, in fact a trick designed to extort money from unsuspecting marks. Then he is off on the 'Great Adventure', a never-to-be-forgotten visit with Snorky to nearby 'Monkey Town', culminating in a brilliant trick played on him by Snorky. The next day, a reinvigorated Samson comes downstairs to find that it's his tenth birthday. Celebrations soon over, he slips out of the house again - this time, making for the vicinity of St. Peter's, the school around which so much of his life thus far has revolved. He stations himself by a tree stump overlooking the school. There, he nostalgically recalls the last New Year's Eve pantomime, a performance of 'Snow White', with the beautiful-beyond-compare Rita Wrigglesworth in the lead role, Snorky as the Wicked Stepmother, and himself and Speedy as the pantomime horse. On the way home, after a near-mystical experience, he realises that he has fallen in love. But all developments are then put on hold: within hours of his return home, Old Guinea is blanketed by the heaviest snow in 250 years - the famous winter of 1947. Back at school after several weeks' closure, Samson's relationship with Snorky deepens, culminating in the fateful 'blood brothers' initiation ceremony. The mood now darkens, and the narrative pace quickens. Soon, Snorky, with his schoolmates gathered around the 'blood brothers' tree stump, makes a failed attempt on his own 'world frog-skinning record': rattled, he hastily announces a 'farewell spectactular' for the last day of summer term, when he will perform a Houdini-like stunt in which he will miraculously effect an escape after being nailed through the wrists and ankles to the tree stump, 'like Jesus Christ'. Samson cannot see how Snorky can possibly survive the crucifixion attempt, and is determined to forestall it. On the last day of term he issues a challenge to Snorky: a game of 'hide and seek' on nearby Old Man Mountain, with Speedy as 'it'. Samson is victorious, and exultant - in spite of being skewered by a panic-induced lunge by Snorky, wielding a vicious hunting knife: Snorky shows himself to be a bad loser, and issues the 'chicken' challenge which will result in Speedy's death. Back in real time, Samson finds himself no
