I have a different brand reader that I bought some time ago that works without 12v dc power in that works on some drives. In these cases, enough power is supplied by USB and no external 12v dc is required.

The speed is much faster than the USB 2 interface on the one it replaces. I love that it has a power switch to control when to disconnect the drive without having to unplug from the PC.

I've only tested IDE (also known as: PATA and ATA) so far, but I plugged in a full-size 3.5" 60 GB hard drive from more than 20 years ago and it mounted right up into Linux. It has a built-in power adapter that proved more than sufficient to spin up this old hard drive. This is so cool! No more digging out an old PC to mount up these old hard drives, and the transfer rate with USB 3.0 is 6x the maximum 100Mb/s IDE could ever dream of. A++ awesome. Just get it.
