Synopsis
Excerpt from The Life of Augustus Henry Law: Priest of the Society of Jesus The Hon. William Towry Law, the father of the subject of the present memoir, was a younger son of the first Lord Ellenborough, who held the office of Lord Chief Justice of England towards the close of the reign of George III. Through Lady Ellenborough, whose name was Towry, the family claim descent from the Blessed Thomas More. Unfortunately the heritage of the Faith was not transmitted to them from this illustrious ancestor; consequently the lost treasure had to be sought for and regained, by the help of God's grace, at the cost of a hard struggle and the surrender of considerable worldly advantages. Mr. Law was educated at Eton and Cambridge; in 1826 he entered the army, serving first with the 5lst Regiment in the Ionian Islands, and subsequently for a very short period, with the Grenadier Guards in London. In 1831 he left the army in view of taking Anglican Orders, and entered at Peter House, Cambridge, as a fellow commoner. Of this College his grandfather, Edmund Law, Bishop of Carlisle, had in the foregoing century been for many years the Master. There was a young lady, the Hon. Augusta Graves, a daughter of the second Lord Graves, to whom he had become much attached, and the only obstacle to his marriage was the limited amount of his income. Now he had an uncle, a wealthy Protestant Bishop, whose wish it had always been, previous to his choice of the army as a profession, that he should become a clergyman. In that case this uncle announced that he would provide liberally for him, in order to evince his gratitude to Mr. Law's father, through whose influence with George IV., when Prince Regent, he had obtained the bishopric of Bath and Wells. Hence by retiring from the army, Mr. Law gratified his uncle's wish, secured his own worldly prospects, and was enabled to contract the alliance on which he had set his heart. Shortly after the birth of Augustus, in 1833, he took his M.A. degree, a privilege then granted to the sons of peers at the end of two and a half years' residence, and was ordained a minister of the Established Church. Although Mr. Law's object in seeking the pastoral office did not exactly correspond with the aspirations that candidates for ordination are usually credited with, namely (as the Protestant service quaintly expresses it), that of "seeking Christ's sheep in this naughty world," he was too conscientious to enter upon this fresh course of life without a full and genuine determination to perform with exactitude all the duties it involved. As Rector of a country parish he was very popular among his parishioners; he endeared himself to them by his kindness and his exertions to promote their temporal and spiritual welfare.
