It is a truism of Latin American folklore that the soul has legs to dance with as surely as wings to fly, and the artistry of Tomas Rodriguez in DIALOGUE demonstrates both an earth-bound and skyward focus. The spirit of the dance is immediately evident in this program richly encompassing the rumba and bolero, and those Latin permutations of the waltz, the pasillo and danza. The word 'waltz' derives from the seed of several words in different Romance languages meaning 'to turn around,' and listening to Rodriguez's renditions of a Columbian pasillo by Jose Luis Enriquez Lucero and a Puerto-Rican danza by Juan Morel Campos are two obvious highlights of a consistently fresh set of interpretations of Latin American and Spanish themes that mark turning points for listeners. Of intense interest are three original Rodriguez compositions, heralding a musician building his own musical house from a visionary recasting of Latin and American musical elements. 'Lullaby for Sinead' and 'You Bring Me Peace' are stirring examples of 'occasional music,' the former written for the christening of a friend's daughter, the latter for a wedding. 'Hymn to the Four Corners,' conceived in Hartland Four Corners, Vermont, is a deeply reflective meditation, in a minor mode, on the spiritual corners of the heart. As the Rodriguez interpretations of modern Latin composers spark a dialogue between Old and New Spain, these new compositions by Tomas Rodriguez ignite the most intimate of dialogues: from the soul of the guitarist to your own, spanning the hemispheres encompassing the geography of spiritual imagination.
